Gameloft: Best iPhone Game Developer

December 25, 2008

I really wanted a Sony PSP at one point and now I’m glad that I held off.  The people at Gameloft have truly brought iPhone games to a whole new level, and they have satisfied my want of a PSP for much less $$.  Gameloft has created some highly rated, and highly graphical iPhone games.  Such names as Brothers in ArmsBrain ChallengeAsphalt 4 Racing, and Hero Sparta.  Although they’ve made some not-so-good games that have received some bad reviews; Diamond Twister, CSI Miami

I recently downloaded Asphalt 4 Racing, and Hero Sparta.  The gaming controls are intuitive for both games.  Very intuitive for Hero of Sparta as the bottom left corner operates as a very responsive “joy stick” for movement through the game.  There are weapons combos and “finishing moves”, multiple levels, and when you beat the game you can repeat it with all of the weapons you obtained the first time through.

Asphalt 4 racing takes the prize for racing games when it comes to controls as it give you 3 different ways to control your vehicle:  touch (my preference; tap the side of the screen you which to steer to), accelerometer (tilt and turn your iPhone/iPod touch), or a steering wheel in the bottom left corner to control with your thumb.  The game has multiple levels and types of races you unlock as you win races, and you can customize your car, and purchase new ones with all the money you win!!  These two games have given me absolute confidence in Gameloft as a developer, and I will not hesitate on purchasing any game they develop that strikes an interest.

10.5.6 disables DFU Mode

December 16, 2008

Anyone into Jailbreaking their iPhone better hold off on the Mac OS X Update 10.5.6, it disables the ability Jailbreak your iPhone with the iPhone Dev Team software. This problem with not having your iPhone or iPod touch able to enter the DFU mode is something that owners of the new “unibody” MacBook are already familiar with; they shipped with this “block” on DFU mode. Deliberate on Apples part? Some say no, some say yes. Either way if you partake in the Jailbreak, don’t update.

My Jailbreak days have been over ever since 2.2. My iPhones performance was so much better that I couldn’t risk it being as buggy as it was when it was Jailbroken with 2.1.

No word yet from the Dev Team on this issue

Pwnage and QuickPwn for 2.1 Firmware

September 14, 2008

The iPhone Dev Team is on top of things!!  They have released new versions of QuickPwn and PwnageTool for the 2.1 Firmware.  Understanding that this voids any warranty you may have with Apple, it offers hope for those living in areas not supplied with iPhones, or if you are locked into a contract with a different cell phone provider.  It will unlock/jailbreak all 1st and 2nd Gen iPhones, but will only jailbreak 3G iPhones.   Anyone selling their 1st or 2nd Gen iPhones on eBay should consider unlocking with this software, it’s easy to use and may increase the value of your auction.  I just sold my 2nd Gen iPhone for $400 US, unlocked.  I upgraded to the 3G for $299.  Can’t go wrong with that deal.  So if this sounds like an app for you, go to the iPhone Dev Teams blog for download links.

    Locly (Acknack Ltd)
Localy is an all in one location program that when opened, uses a built in browser to display a fantastic menu of location based search results. These include: Flickr images, Local Twitters, Wikipedia Articles, Local Events, Local News, Restaurants, Pubs, Cafe’s, Shops and Supermarkets, Taxi Firms, Films and Movies, Hotels, Gas stations, Banks and ATM’s, and Museums. When you click on these categories, another screen will be displayed with all local items and from there you click a map link for Google Maps, or the number and it will call the business (only on the iPhone of course). Locly is FREE.

    Ambiance (Matt Coneybeare)
My sister uses one of those “noise” machines to fall asleep to. It’s basically an alarm clock with sounds that you can play while you fall asleep, and put it on a timer, or of course let it play all night. She uses the sound of a fan. Ambiance is an application that is just that….it’s a sound machine. It is constantly getting updated, and right now has: Birds, Blue Noise, Cicada, Clock, City, Coast, Creek, Crickets, Fan, Fan-oscillating, Fire-big, Fire-small, Frog, Heartbeat, Light Saber, Machine, Owl, Pink noise, Rain-light, Rain-thunder, Rain-tin roof, Rain-wind, River, Shower, Stream, Subway, Train, Vinyl, Violet noise, Waterfall, Waves, White noise, Wind, Wind-haunting. Most sounds are loud enough to play from your iPhones speakers at your bedside, or you could use any type of iPhone/iPod Touch speaker docking devices (of course headphones too). Ambiance is $0.99

    Data Case (Veiosoft, LLC)
Data case is a wireless USB thumb drive…basically. When you launch this application, it will appear as a device in the side bar of your Finder (you must be on the same wireless network). If you click on it in the Finder, a message will pop up on your iPhone asking you if you allow the connections. After you accept the connection, you can drag any type of file (pretty much) to the Shared Files folder on your iPhone. Anyone on your network also can view and copy this file. PDF, files, .Doc files, MP3 files, JPEG files, and pretty much every other type of file can not only be stored on the iPhone in this folder, but can also be played on the iPhone. Data Case is $6.99

Update: I’ve used FileMagnet, and Air Sharing, and Data case beats them ALL hands down for ease of use. There is virtually no setup needed.

All of these applications can be found in the iTunes App store.

Best of the App Store Part 1

    September 5, 2008
    appstore.jpg

Since the launch of the App Store I have been very busy trying and buying many iPhone applications. I feel that I’ve come to the point where I’ve really found applications that are a must, and some that are..well, perhaps not worth the time. I’m going to begin a series of reviews for the apps that I feel are a must have for iPhone and iPod Touch user runing 2.0 Firmware or higher.

The first three I’m going to review are Facebook, Zenbe Lists, and Twinkle. To find any of these apps just open up iTunes and search for them in the iTunes store. Lets begin.

    Facebook
If you’re a Facebook user, this app is a MUST. The mobile Safari version of Facebook is quite nice, but this app is simple, and I really like the way it handles tasks. The default opening page is the “Status” screen where you can answer the question, “What are you doing?”

Below this line are all of your friends most recent status posts. Tapping on their status post brings you to a mini-feed with all of their most recent status posts. In the top right of that screen is the profile button, tapping on that brings you to their profile page where you can then tap on “wall”, “mini-feed”, and “photos”. Near the bottom of that page you can see their birthdate, you can send a message, poke, email, and CHAT. That’s right, you can use the new Facebook chat feature within this iPhone app.

All along the bottom there are other icons “home” “your name (you profile page)”, “friends”, “chat”, and “inbox”.

Although I use this application daily, I do have a couple complaints. First off there is no “events” section to view your upcoming events, or to invite friends to them. Secondly, there is no where to see or confirm new friend requests. This feature I would be certain would be their number one priority in developing the app.

All in all, if you love Facebook, you will love this application.

    Zenbe Lists (Robert Kieffer)
This is the best to do list applications out there (in my opinion). First thing you need to do is go to Zenbe Lists and sign up for a free account. From there you can create multiple to do lists, set due dates, share them with others (works great if they have a Zenbe account as well), and best off all, they all sync beautifully with the FREE iPhone app Zenbe Lists.

Zenbe is a pretty interesting site, and in fact there is a main page that you can sign up to utilize the mail aggregator style web app. The web and iPhone interface are similar in style, and the great thing about the iPhone app is you can type in landscape mode. You can see a demo video on HERE.

There is one downside, but it’s really not a downside as you can change this in your settings app (iPhone settings screen, not within the app). When you load Zenbe lists it defaults to sync at load, you can change this in your settings.

    Twinkle (Tapulous)
There a couple of Twitter applications in the App store, and I must first of all say that Twitterific is a very slick twitter application, and I do prefer the interface (it’s also on my iPhone). Having said that, the reason I chose Twinkle, is for the “Nearby” feature. With this screen you can see all of the Twitter posts done using Twinkle within a select area. You can choose from 25km (or miles) all the way up to “Everywhere”. There is also a Home screen for your friends/followers only. You can tap on a tweet and see there profile, previous tweets and reply. When you select to reply it automatically puts the @ before there there username and you just type your reply. The interface is not nearly as slick as Twitterific, I’m not a big fan of the starlight background and colour choices. The thing that makes the app stand out from the others is the Nearby functions, it’s just too cool.
